|Posterous launching a new Groups feature|

Posterous is today launching a new Groups feature that channels the
startup’s early days as an e-mail-centric service. Posterous Groups
aims to give everyday web users the ability to turn e-mail lists
The product seeks to challenge group products by Yahoo, Google and even Facebook with something simpler and more accessible to the average e-mail user. “People want really powerful e-mail lists,” says CEO Sachin Agarwal, “so we built the greatest e-mail list product.”
Though the new feature was built from scratch to satisfy the needs of private networks, Posterous Groups works just as you’d expect a new product from this team to work.
Once you’ve done that, Posterous will reply with information on how to set the group URL and e-mail address; groups are private by default. Anyone who participates in the group can then add to the group — text, video, photos, music and most other file types — simply by sending an e-mail to the group address. Comments, of course, can be sent via e-mail and all participants can optionally get instant notifications for these responses.
The optional web component to the Groups product is very impressive, should you wish to use it. For Group owners, they can manage user privileges, add members to groups and create new pages. Everyone else can check out Group content, sorted by activity and not by date, post new updates and add comments. The content and communication-focused interface makes the Groups experience all the more engaging.
Posterous has long had the ability for users to create and manage group blogs, but Groups is better designed for multi-party communication around content instead of pivoting around blog posts. Of course, group blog owners can convert their sites to the new Posterous Groups should they so choose.
Along with today’s news, the startup is also releasing an application for Android. It’s said to include basic features for updating Posterous sites, but will eventually be on par with the existing app for iPhone. Grab the app by scanning the QR code below.
